Claire was selected as one of the 12 kiwis representing New Zealand on the 2009 Ship for World Youth. The seven week international youth leadership programme aims to develop strong and continuing links among the youth of other nations by networking and training onboard the vessel. It gives the young leaders the chance to be exposed to a wide variety of cultures and ideas which will enable them to make a visible international contribution.
While on board, Claire drew on her work with the intercultural program AFS and as a tutor of former refugees for the Wellington Somali Council to participate in seminars and discussions on cross-cultural communication and understanding. Other seminars on leadership, working with young people and education.
For its 21st voyage, the ship left Japan on January 23 heading for the Pacific. After visiting Tonga and Vanuatu it docked in Auckland on February 11 for four days, before making its way back to Japan to arrive on March 3. Claire joined other young leaders from Canada, Japan, Egypt, Fiji, Mauritius, Norway, Peru, Tonga, United Arab Emirates, Vanuatu, Venezuela, and Yemen.
Welcome Home Claire, we are stoked to have ya home!
Much Love,
OTE Crew
